I started out doing security back in early 2000. I just moved to Queensland and I was looking to do something different with my career at the time but was unsure what I’ll do. I was still young and was still unsure of what I wanted to do so I thought I would get into security for a while until I worked out what I was going to pursue as my career path.
I started out as a young guy with no experience in security. I had to learn very fast as the first security company I worked for just threw me into the deep end (so to speak) due to my good communication skills and friendly personality. They thought I would make a good doorman.
As I gained more experience and understanding for the security industry I started to really enjoy the ability to be able to make a difference in the clients’ businesses that I was working for and the experience that people would have when they would visit the site.

During the first few years I was working for different security companies, I wasn’t provided any support, training, or communication. I was merely an employee who was rostered to shifts and was expected to know what to do at each site.
Even as I gain experience in the industry, each site would have different requirements and challenges to deal with. The sites with no training and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are particularly harder to work in as you really need to have a good understanding of the industry to know what’s the best way to deal with the situation if its only experience you must pull from.
Learning from this experience, I wanted to improve the industry and the experience that our clients are getting. That’s when I started Prosek Security.
As a security provider, we don’t just supply security officers. We provide asset protection and risk reduction for businesses to help them improve their bottom line. In order to do this, there needs to be a really good understanding of the clients’ businesses through full risk assessments and SOPs. But it doesn’t stop there. It is equally important to select the right security personnel and provide them with ongoing training and support. As our saying goes, “Security officers are only as good as the training and support they receive.” Without this, security officers won’t have a clear vision or understanding of what is required of them which can result in mistakes happening.
We are often asked about what experience we have that is particular to their industry and what makes us different from our competitors.
The industry is always changing and evolving. Different trends are happening. Changes in businesses and their security requirements force us to also change the services we offer. The term “Security Officer” is now turning into “Customer Service Officer” or “Safety Officer”. Some businesses are gaining preference over the electronic side of the industry as they believe this will save them money. But it will never replace having a proactive security officer on site. Technology is good for capturing evidence after the risk has happened but it’s not as helpful in stopping incidents from happening.
I get asked this all the time and it’s very easy to answer.
We listen to our clients. We go over their requirements – why they feel they need security in the first place and what issues and concerns they have. Then we’ll conduct a complete risk assessment of their site, develop a site Standard Operating Procedure Manual, and provide ongoing training to all the security officers we send to work at their site.
Another important aspect is getting a better understanding of the criminal activity within the area through coordinating with the local police. With this knowledge, we can equip our security officers better so they’ll be able to deal with any situation as it arises.
We highly value providing full transparency to our clients. This way, our clients see that they are getting what they pay for. We utilize a guard verification system with GPS tracking and a cloud-based reporting system in all of our sites so that clients can see what’s happening on their sites in real time. With these systems, we are able to make better operational decisions to help improve the security of our clients’ sites more efficiently.
I believe that by providing a fully-transparent service to all of our clients, they’ll develop trust that we’re here for the long haul. We see to it that our clients get the best results and the most value out of our services by not recommending something they don’t need or services that have better, less costly alternatives.
Another thing we really take pride in is the ongoing customer service we provide our clients. We understand that our clients would like to get value out of their investment not just through the services we provide but also in the support they get from us along the way. We keep our communication lines open with our clients so they can freely share their feedback on our services. This allows us to improve ourselves through the experiences our clients are having.
There are several things that are very frustrating about our industry. One is when companies within the industry try to cut corners or skirt the law, ending up not being able to provide the services they promised their clients. These companies give the industry a bad name that we need to strive to clean up. It is companies like ours, who do our best to comply with industry standards and the Fair Work Act, who suffer the implications of these bad practices.
Also, there is a lack of ongoing training and support for security officers. As I said earlier, security officers are only as good as the training they receive during their employment for a company. How will a new security officer learn the essential elements of security or how to identify risks clients face if he doesn’t receive any ongoing support or training from his employer?
I would like to see a number of things to be changed within the industry.
Firstly, I would like to see clients do background checks on security providers before engaging them for their security. By not supporting companies that are not compliant with legislation or Fair Work Act and do not have anything to offer businesses other than their cheap prices, clients are able to help clean up the security industry.
Secondly, security providers should pay closer attention to what their clients need. Businesses don’t just need security officers to show up. They engage with security providers to help reduce their risk and liabilities. Security companies should take more effort into understanding these needs by doing full-risk assessments and getting familiar with the clients’ operating procedures they need to follow.
Lastly, I wish for more ongoing support and training for security officers. Some of the much-needed training they should get are in risk management, WHO&S, customer service, first aid, armed robbery, and bomb threats. Being frontline people for businesses, it is important that all security personnel know how to deal with different risk situations and how to interact with people visiting the business premises in a professional manner.
Over the next year, we are investing more in our employees and operations to streamline things better. This will give us, as a company, a better position within the market. As we are constantly growing, so are the risks and requirements of our clients. Having better-trained employees allows us to supply our clients with a higher quality and competitive service from the start.
We are in the process of developing our own very unique software that will be changing the industry forever. The system we are in the process of developing with not only allow us to improve our operations but will also provide a better way for us to monitor the activities and issues our clients have at their sites. The data that can be pulled from our system in real time will allow us to analyse live data so we can provide recommendations on how we can improve our clients’ security. The system will also allow our clients to access the data at will right from their own computer as they will be granted full access.
At the moment, most of my time is spent working on the system we’re developing. I believe it is going to change the way we currently operate as well as help our clients reduce their risk.
When I’m not working on the system, I really enjoy learning new things to keep me motivated. I spend quality time with my daughter and partner, the two most important people in my life who make me the person I am today.
